Bookkeeping is often treated like a task that can wait until tax season. That approach may produce a year-end file, but it does not give the owner current information during the year. Monthly bookkeeping helps the business reconcile accounts, resolve questions while the facts are fresh, understand profit and cash, monitor customer balances, and prepare for financial conversations before a deadline arrives.

Three myths to leave behind

  1. “My bank balance tells me how the business is doing.” The bank balance is one cash number. It does not show the complete financial picture.
  2. “QuickBooks does the bookkeeping automatically.” Software can automate steps, but classifications, transfers, reconciliations, and unusual balances still need review.
  3. “Receipts are enough.” Receipts support transactions. Bookkeeping connects those transactions to reconciled accounts and usable reports.

All ten myths, and what to do instead, are in this week’s article: 10 Bookkeeping Myths That Are Holding Your Business Back.
